There are certain movies that become part of a family's holiday tradition, and for us, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York has always been one of them. So when we planned a family trip to New York City and decided to stay at The Plaza Hotel, we couldn't resist recreating some of Kevin McCallister's most iconic moments.

From the moment we stepped through the famous revolving doors, it felt like we had stepped into the movie itself.

Checking Into an Icon

Located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, The Plaza has welcomed royalty, celebrities, and travelers for more than a century. Yet for many families, The Plaza is instantly recognizable as Kevin's luxury home-away-from-home during his New York adventure.

Walking through the grand lobby, our children immediately began pointing out scenes they remembered from the film. The elegance of the hotel combined with the excitement of being in one of New York City's most famous landmarks created the perfect start to our trip.

The Ultimate Home Alone Experience

One of the highlights of our stay was participating in The Plaza's famous Home Alone-inspired experience.

Of course, no Kevin McCallister adventure would be complete without a limousine ride through Manhattan while enjoying a giant cheese pizza. Watching the city roll by from the comfort of a stretch limousine felt like stepping directly into the movie.

Our route included many of New York's most iconic landmarks, including:

  • Fifth Avenue

  • Rockefeller Center

  • FAO Schwarz

  • Times Square

  • Radio City Music Hall

  • Central Park

  • Empire State Building

The experience brought together sightseeing, family fun, and a healthy dose of movie nostalgia.

Empire State Building VIP Experience

While Kevin may have spent his time exploring the city on his own, we decided to add an unforgettable VIP experience at the Empire State Building.

The express access allowed us to skip much of the waiting and spend more time enjoying the incredible views over Manhattan. Seeing New York from above gave us a whole new appreciation for the city and quickly became one of the highlights of our trip.

If you're planning a family visit, this is one experience that is absolutely worth the splurge.

Sundaes at The Plaza

One of the things we loved most about The Plaza was how well they create memorable family moments.

On our arrival evening, we enjoyed one of the hotel's signature ice cream sundaes. Sometimes the simplest experiences become the most memorable, and sharing a giant dessert after a day of travel was the perfect way to kick off our New York adventure.

“Two scoops… Make it Three, I’m not Driving.”

Broadway Magic

No trip to New York is complete without Broadway, and we were thrilled to see The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre.

The costumes, music, and incredible performances captivated both the adults and the kids. Even if you've seen the movie countless times, experiencing it live on Broadway is something entirely different.

Why Families Love The Plaza

While The Plaza is known worldwide for its luxury, what impressed us most was how family-friendly the experience felt.

The staff went above and beyond to make our stay special, and the hotel's location made it easy to explore many of New York's most iconic attractions. Being directly across from Central Park and steps from Fifth Avenue shopping meant we were always close to our next adventure.

For families looking to combine luxury, nostalgia, and unforgettable experiences, it's hard to imagine a better place to stay.

Final Thoughts

Our Home Alone-inspired adventure at The Plaza was more than just a hotel stay. It was an experience that brought one of our favorite family movies to life.

Between the limousine ride, pizza, Empire State Building views, Broadway, and the magic of The Plaza itself, we created memories that our family will talk about for years to come.

If you've ever watched Home Alone 2 and dreamed of experiencing New York City like Kevin McCallister, I can confidently say: it's every bit as fun as you imagine.

And unlike Kevin, we managed not to get lost.
